Licensing and Commercialization

We in OTTCP work to effectively commercialize technologies and innovations developed at Caltech and JPL by licensing Caltech and JPL technologies to established companies or to start-ups, and by helping researchers to attract and build industry partners.

Caltech executes about 40 to 50 license agreements per year, many of which result in royalties back to the Institute and to its inventors. Researchers have a key role to play in the licensing process.

For innovators interested in the more entrepreneurial route of creating a new business, we can guide you through the process of creating a business plan, acquiring an option agreement, and attracting funding. An average of eight new Caltech start-ups are established each year.
